Sam Leon

I began Wu style Tai Chi Chuan in 2008, at the Academy in Bethnal Green London and started to learn how to teach there in 2011 under the guidance of Sifu Gary Wragg. His approach to teaching has been an inspiration to me and opened a whole new world, both in personal development and in sharing with people from all walks of life.

My background is in the arts and since graduating from drama school in 1980 I have travelled and performed in classical plays, devised productions, physical theatre, musicals, joined a clown troupe and worked as a juggler. I am presently singing and playing various instruments in 3 ethno folk bands with repertoire from around the world. Tai Chi Chuan is the only physical discipline I have found that offers a depth and diversity that reflects my career as a performer. This has brought balance to my life as well as the stability of feeling that I am part of a Tai Chi family at the Academy.

I was honoured to become a Closed Door student of Sifu Gary Wragg in 2018.

In 2013 I began teaching outside the Academy, applying Tai Chi to a wide spectrum of needs within the community and have been running regular groups for (among others) :  Rheumatology patients at Central Middlesex hospital; Hestia Integrated Mental Health; Mixed ability Community Church Plaistow; Survivors together  (charity for women who have been sexually abused); Nuffield Health fitness gym; Age UK.

I also run the Tuesday lunchtime beginners class at the Academy.
