Dr. Chuang Shiou Huey

Martial Arts History/Biography of Training/Teaching:

Sifu Chuang Shiou Huey began her study of Wu style Tai Chi Chuan under Sifu kwok in Singapore in 1962.

After arriving in the UK she trained with her older sister who also studied under Sifu Kwok. After her sister left the Great Britain, she continued the training on her own in London and with Sifu Kwok when she paid her annual visit to Singapore. However, she also began her search for a Wu style school to continue her regular training in London. This search took 25 years until 1991.

In April 1991, Sifu Chuang joined the Wu's Tai Chi Chuan Academy led by Sifu Gary Wragg who is a disciple of 5th generation head of Wu family, Grandmaster Eddie Wu Kwong Yu. She also taught and helped to run the school until February 2000.

In 1996, she had the honour to be invited to become a member of the Wu family Tai Chi Chuan, as a disciple of Grandmaster Wu Kwong Yu, the Gatekeeper of the Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan.

Year 2000 - 2003, Sifu Chuang was contented with teaching Tai Chi Chuan at the Royal Free Hospital and some private lessons while pursuing her Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy training at the Tavistock Clinic. However, since year 2001, her sifu, Grandmaster Wu Kwong Yu took over the administration and the running of the International Federation of Wu style Tai Chi Chuan. Following his vision of spreading Wu style more widely, she gave up the Royal Free Hospital teaching, and, with the honour from and the blessing of Grandmaster Eddie Wu, set up the Wu's Tai Chi Chuan Academy, London Regents Park in June 2003.

In 2006, Sifu Chuang was asked by Grandmaster Wu to follow up the enquiry from a group in Athens who were interested in learning a style of Tai Chi Chuan with proper lineage. Sifu Chuang was invited over to teach in Athens. She did two weekend long workshops for this group, introducing them to the fundamental basic principles and the 108 movements of Wu Family Tai Chi Chuan. She really enjoyed working with this group of enthusiastic, hungry for knowledge, hard-working people. She also encouraged them to attend her Sifu, Grandmaster Wu's annual London workshops which they did in 2007 and 2008. In 2009 May, Grandmaster Wu was invited over to conduct a one week's teaching in Athens. He also gave the official affiliation/recognition of the academy. The chief instructor of the academy, Dionisis Tsetselis also became a disciple of Grandmaster Wu.

In 2009, Sifu Chuang was given the honour by her Sifu to take disciples. The ceremony was held at the Regents Park Academy London and presided over by Grandmaster Wu on 6th of June 2009.

Besides teaching at the Regents Park Academy, Sifu Chuang also holds a weekly class (since 2004) at a shelter-housing group for old folks, the youngest being 80 years old; she also holds 2 weekly classes at Cancerkin Centre, Royal Free Hospital (Charity for Breast Cancer).

Sifu Chuang had participated in competitions in the UK, Europe, North America, HongKong and China. She had won 22 gold medals and several silver and bronze.

She had also taught outside the UK, mainly in the EU countries, such as, France, Spain. She had been on BBC radio show on Tai Chi Chuan as well as conducting corporate teaching. In 2001-2002, she worked with the Kinohana group teaching Tai Chi Chuan at various European locations.

In 1999, Sifu Chuang took an early retirement from her dental profession.

In 2010, Sifu Chuang retired from teaching and moved back to Singapore.  She now enjoys a simple and quiet lifestyle.
